MCKAY:
Samuel Garvin, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Kansas
City, Kan., was born on a farm near Mercer, Pa., April 12, 1868, and s
the son of James Garvin, a farmer born in Armagh, County Armagh,
Ireland, March, 1827, a son of William and Jane Garvin. Originally the
Garvin family lived in France. From France a member of the family
removed to Scotland and settled at Dumbarton, where descendants of the
family rank among the leading people there today. The family became
members of the established church of their adopted country, that of the
Presbyterian. From Scotland some members of the family immigrated to
County Armagh, Ireland, where the family rose to great prominence and
possessed a coat of arms, and from there the paternal grandparents of
Mr. Garvin came to America with their family in 1840, and settled at
Salem, Pa.
In 1851 James Garvin married Sarah Jamison, who was born at Bush
Mills, Ireland, May 6, 1828, and came to the United States with her
parents, William and Jennie (McKay) Jamison, who settled at Stoneboro,
Pa. James Garver, father of Samuel, died at Fredonia, Pa., in 1901, and
the mother, Sarah (Jamison) Garvin, survived until May 5, 1903, when
she, too, passed away at Washington, Pa.

In a recent trip back to Crawford Co. I had an opportunity to visit
one of the
older residents of Crawford Co. Mary Jamison. She relayed an
interesting
story about her great grandmother that she heard when she was young.
When
the
Jamisons were coming from Ireland, they crossed New York on the Erie
Canal.
Alexander Jamison b 1796 m. Jennie McKay b1797; son James Jamison m.
Nancy
McMaster, dau of my James McMaster b 1799. He had an accident and
broke his
leg.
Upon reaching Buffalo and running out of money, Jennie and one of the
oldest
sons walked from Buffalo to Hartstown area on the towpath while Alex
and the
younger children rode the canal boat. The canal at one time extended
to
Hartstown. So when you think life is tough for you, just think of
what our
pioneer ancestors did.
On the 1876 map, you can find Jas. Jamison property located near
present day
Pymatuning Dam in S. Shenango. Mary grew up in this house and has
lived in
the area all her life. She also told the story of when Pymatuning
Res. was
filling. How many people do you know that can remember Pymatuning
Res.

Daniel (1847-1910) was a Presbyterian minister. He attended a
theological seminary in Newburgh. Since Margaret died in 1935 in PA, can
we assume that’s where she and Daniel settled after some time?

Daniel G. McKay’s father is William McKay of county Antrim,
Ireland. His mother is Eliza Lanigan. William McKay’s ancestors are
from Scotland, and married into some Jamisons. They went to PA, though,
not NY. William’s father William McKay was born in Glasgow, Sco and
married Anne Porter. This William’s father is John McKay (the start of

For research, I copied off two lists of McKay descendents. I am mostly
interested in whether the Jamisons of PA are related to the Jamisons of
Newburgh, NY.
It appears that Daniel McKay only knew of Margaret Leslie from being
at Seminary in Newburgh? Although maybe there is still a relationship
prior among the Jamisons.

McKay, b. about 1884- his family remained in Ireland.
There are both McKays and McElroys in Ahoghill and Drummaul Parishes in County
Antrim. These are both approximately 5-6 miles S and SW of Ballymena. The
grandmother of my grandfather David Hamilton Weir (1873-1964) is listed as a
McElroy in the LDS IGI. In the house next to where my grandfather was born,
there was a Hugh McKay Weir. In Griffith's Valuation of 1848-1864, the
townland of Ballyminstra, Ahoghill Parish, had the following McKay families
listed: James, John, Margaret, and Samuel, as well as a James McKee.
